Challenges
Latinos make up 21% of school children in the Philadelphia School District yet only 4% of its teachers
Schools in the Philadelphia area are among the most segregated in the country, especially for Latino students, according to the Century Foundation
Latino kids are at high risk of multiple traumas, and of acting out. More kids in Philadelphia experience four or more childhood traumas compared to kids in the rest of the nation
Opportunities
Increase enrollment in Early Childhood Education and strengthen the development of professional bilingual and culturally competent staff.
Nurture opportunities for trauma informed services.
Work with the Commonwealth of PA and the Building Trades to:
Increase representation of BIPOC populations in apprenticeships that lead to a career in the trades.
Align Career Technical Education (CTE) curricula with requirements for city licenses and union apprenticeships.
